Of all of the unlikely places to end up on New Year's Eve, several friends and I found ourselves in Kiev, Ukraine to celebrate. This goes back to first rule of trip planning in Libya: look at the board in the airport and see where you can fly for your next trip. That's what led us to realize that Libyan Airlines has a direct to the Ukraine on Thursday, just in time for the weekend. It's pretty hard to beat a direct flight that's only 3 hours long and 600 dinar.
We were a little dubious about taking a Libyan plane from the desert to the frozen expanse of the former Soviet Union. Everything worked out just fine though. We think they use the Libyan planes to sand the runways as they land. 
We spent the first part of NYE inside one of the clubs downtown. Shortly before midnight we made our way down the road to Independence Square for the real party. The square was crazy! Thousands of Ukrainians out with bottles of champagne and fireworks. There were concerts going on the main stage all night, followed by a speech from the Prime Minister. I can't tell you what she was saying, but how could you not vote for her?
