I had not seen the latest on the visa issues before I made my post yesterday.
I have a few friends, Europeans and Americans, who have been stuck in Malta since last week waiting on their visa renewals. My current visa expires pretty soon too in case anyone is wondering. It will be interesting to see how long this lasts.
